Little Girl Anime Power Rankings – Week 44

PriPara this week made me realize that this little series is coming upon it’s own one year anniversary. Not like I plan to do anything special, but it is nice that we made it at least a year in without any hitches. But we’ll save all the sappy words for when it actually happens.

The History of Mexican Cuisine feat. Aikatsu!

Well, at least it didn’t go into a lecture about how early explorers fucked shit up.

Previous Standings

1) Aikatsu! – 369 Points
2) Jewelpet Magical Change – 323 Points
3) Go! Princess Precure – 289 Points
4) PriPara – 228 Points

The positions are so firmly placed right now I’m not really sure when things were turn around again.

Weekly Point Distribution

1) Aikatsu! – +9 Points
2) Jewelpet Magical Change – +6 Point
3) Go! Princess Precure – +3 Point
4) PriPara – +1 Points

A Word From the Big Man
This week was basically just a shitty version of last week for at least three of these four shows.

With how hot it is inside these, being a giant jalapeno is somehow fitting.

I didn’t really know what to expect this week, and a Hinaki episode is definitely something I didn’t see coming. But I’m glad they did it, really glad in fact. Despite how the entire first generation of Aikatsu! was based around a main three, it’s been hard to really place Hinaki together with Akari and Sumire. She’s been semi built up only to be separated and pulled away from the main two from time to time. And when the units were formed, it really just felt like they were pulling a last effort to find a place to stick her (and Juri for that matter). They still might not have a real plan for Hinaki, but this episode at least shed a lot more light on her development as a character. Both Akari and Sumire have had ample moments to shine recently in their new units, and it’s nice to see that Hinaki finally gets a bit of spotlight. On that note, Aikatsu! is creeping into it’s final stretch for the season, and I’m still not positive I understand where they plan to wrap things up.

I honestly can’t tell if Ruby is angry or hungry.

Magical Change did more or less a repeat of last week with maybe a little less oomph. I think this week was more of a balance between both parts, but was more or less defined by a more humorous first half. Still, it kept me entertained the entire way through and that says tons more for it than the remaining two shows on this ranking.

They promised me three episodes dedicated to my character development.

I think this week just kind of ties into my constant complaint with Precure this season. It just feels as if they rush all these developments out without really any reason as to why they’re doing it. I’m also pretty sure staff might just be throwing darts on a board of things they’ve done in previous seasons and picking out episode plots based on that, rather than actually thinking a proper timeline through. I will admit I didn’t hate the episode and watching Towa struggle in the real world was amusing, but it quickly evolved into bang, boom instant character development. I think they have and could probably lead into it a little smoother, and it just feels like they’re pushing ahead really quickly for still unknown reasons. Oh, and Lock randomly sprouting muscles was a little bit on the awkward side.

Going backward isn’t how you go forward.

PriPara this week decided to do a not recap, recap episode that randomly tried to maybe get Dorothy a few more fans (because she’s been working real hard to be a likable character since her creation). It was really evident it was something staff really wanted to do but didn’t think about working in even slightly. Staff just knew one thing, “We want to do this and no matter how awkward it sits in the plot, we’re gonna do it”. This week kind of screams wonders about PriPara’s aspirations to have a plot inhibited by the staff’s inability to actually make it work. Maybe next week.

Wrap-Up
Not the prettiest of weeks, but there was some good of it. I’m just going to hope everybody kind of licks their wounds and comes back a little more fresh next week.
