Little Girl Anime Power Rankings – Week 46

Hopefully everyone has been managing to beat the heat this summer. Not like it’s any worse than the previous years but that doesn’t make it any less unpleasant than usual.

The heat of summer almost feels worth it.

Almost. Not really.

A Word From the Big Man
I actually had to make a few hard decisions on where to put what this week. But since it was mostly a week that was just about being cute (maybe sans one show), I think it became easier to weigh everything on the same scale.

Akari’s just sad that she didn’t get a new swimsuit.

So we’ve made it to the point in the year where we get the off episode. The previous years have always focused on a smaller group and this is probably the first time it was just meant as a full out fanservice episode. And it’s probably a safe judgement because isolating any single group would have probably pissed a lot of people off. I think the real charm outside of just being a dumb fun episode, is it also did a really good job of just doing a lot of throwbacks to various points in the series (previous season as well as the movie). But since none of the shows did anything really special this week, I felt inclined to hand the top spot to the show that pleased me the most overall.

See? This week is adorable.

I feel if any show didn’t pull it’s weight it was Jewelpet. I think it just hit one of those weeks where they really didn’t have any good jokes and just threw out what they had. And what they had wasn’t exactly genius. I think if you’ve been alive for at least twenty years you’ve probably seen these gags at least a million times. And it’s really not that funny after the second or third time you’ve seen it.

Melons in a suitcase.

I think this was actually a really good week for Precure and a really cute episode. The problem was it was still an episode that focused on Towa learning the exact same lesson as every week. I’m pretty sure Towa has gone through the “hey, we’re all here for you” lesson in about every episode since she’s been introduced. The problem is, she still seems to have to relearn that lesson at the end of every episode as of recent. There are probably other ways you could be developing Towa rather than just reinforcing the same points over and over again. It’s not doing much for her character and just continues to drag the pace down when staff unnecessarily rushed things in the first place.

Schoolyard shenanigans.

PriPara has been struggling to do something decent with Fuwari’s character since her introduction, and this is probably the first week where it feels like they’re going in the right direction. It finally set up an actual point of conflict between the new characters and, for once, made Fuwari seem like a somewhat more down to Earth character. What’s humorous is staff is making it fairly obvious who they want to set Fuwari up with as time goes on because they are just magically focusing one group over the other as of recent. But hopefully they can roll off of this like with the previous arc and not fall backwards into the usual hole.

Definitely an improvement over last week, but nothing to write home about.
