Little Girl Anime Power Rankings – Week 49

I won’t say anything other than it’s another one of those weeks. Summer is really turning out to be the dry season, and I don’t mean in reference to the actual weather.

Somewhere in the world someone got an idea for a new light novel.

Thanks a lot Magical Change.

Previous Standings

1) Aikatsu! – 405 Points
2) Jewelpet Magical Change – 367 Points
3) Go! Princess Precure – 304 Points
4) PriPara – 238 Points

In an alternate universe these rankings are completely reversed and constantly shifting. I wouldn’t mind being in that universe.

Weekly Point Distribution

1) Go! Princess Precure – +9 Points
2) Jewelpet Magical Change – +6 Points
3) Aikatsu! – +3 Points
4) PriPara – +1 Point

A Word From the Big Man
Looks pretty different, huh? You know some shit went down.

Those losers are standing in my spotlight.

You know, I was honestly looking forward to see what they would do with this week’s episode. And it was honestly just a stick in the mud. I guess the initial premise of the episode was fairly interesting. They had already highlighted the discomfort of Akari, Hinaki, and Sumire being directly competitive with each other (something that was generally ignored in the original trio). But then the episode just kind of 360’ed into a story about the original trio, who had just been thrown back in as if they were the main characters all season. I understand it was necessary to bring back the original trio for the closing (?) arc, but I don’t know if they had to be the real focus of this episode. It made it obvious the whole Aikatsu 8 announcement was really just being done for the sake of them, since it seems it’s not really meant to hold any water in the series. Since we’re shifting to a completely unrelated thing next episode, it was just this small venture that meant nothing other than to try and draw some feelings. The real problem is it’s just showing up at the wrong time, wrong place. And that equates to a really badly thought out and timed episode.

Lovera making the appeal she is, in fact, a polar bear.

The only thing I feel I need to highlight this week is how the final section of Jewelpet managed to spark a joke so old that even I felt funny. You sometimes jokingly get the vibe that the jokes in Jewelpet are a little too old even for the older audience, but then they go ahead and parody a show from the 70’s. I can’t say I know the average age of the parents of Jewelpet audiences nowadays, but I’m pretty sure G-Men 75 is a little old, even for them. That aside, it was still the same simple nonsense you’ve come to expect from Magical Change on a weekly basis. What’s there to complain about?

I’m surprised Precure hasn’t started promoting selfie sticks yet.

Congratulations Precure, you did alright this week. But guess what? We’re back to Towa…again. I guess the idea this season was to not try and do the usual individual character episodes per se and use every single character as a development tool for Towa instead. You could try and sneak one past me and say, “But this also was one of those dual development episodes with Yui,” and you wouldn’t be wrong. It’s probably one of the few reasons I felt it necessary to place Precure above Jewelpet this week. It was also probably one of the better Towa-centric episodes despite the fact it enforced the exact same lesson she’s learned in every one (being a team player). I’m not saying that drawing out Towa’s development is bad, but just add something else to her character other than her inability to fully trust everyone. But there were also larger developments that happened in the episode and that says a lot for the series going forward. Count the keys 1, 2, and 3. No? Fine.

This scene almost makes the episode worth the thirty minutes of my life.

Falulu comes back. Falulu leaves garbage in PriPara. That garbage might tie into the Prince’s scheme if he gets his hands on it. And now you’re caught up on what happened.

I think the funny thing is that everything really has a direction other than Jewelpet that they’ve chosen to go in. So maybe once we get through a few more weeks we’ll see some huge swings from everything back into a competitive spirit. Or we won’t and I’ll just be sad.
