Little Girl Anime Power Rankings Season 2 – Week 25

I kind of forget that the PriPara movie was coming out soon, and evidently the staff did as well because they had to show an unfinished version of it at the pre-screening. Actually, maybe that would explain the sudden drop in writing quality in the show…probably not. But we better keep our eyes peeled on the quality of the show over the next couple weeks just to be safe.

Moby Dick seeks thee not.

I could fill an album with all the different Johnny poses that I wanted to use for the title card this week.

Previous Standings

1) Aikatsu! – 230 Points
2) PriPara – 204 Points
3) Rilu Rilu Fairilu – 142 Points
4) Mahou Tsukai Precure! – 138 Points

Precure continues it’s long climb to the top the hard way. I kind of wish I had some way to help it, but this is why relay races suck sometimes.

Weekly Point Distribution

1) Mahou Tsukai Precure! – +9 Points
2) Aikatsu! – +6 Points
3) PriPara – +3 Points
4) Rilu Rilu Fairilu – +1 Point

A Word From the Big Man
Unfortunately, this is one of those weeks where it wasn’t really decided by who did the best. Getting a top spot was ultimately decided by staying above a certain level.

Creeping up on your students isn’t a recommended skill for teachers.

Aikatsu earns it’s spot for doing another small and steady lead up into it’s last lap. If you really need to talk about Starlight Queen Cup, then you have to bring Mizuki into the conversation. And this episode was basically just meant to reinforce her history in regards to the Cup as well as the other big players from it in regards to the first couple seasons. Unfortunately, it was another time where we had to see a most likely planned plot line get cut off with the end of the series. The future rivalry between Mikuru and Mizuki was something that the staff probably had plans for, but it never really had the time to come to fruition. So they kind of had to bring it up and close it out during the course of this episode.

Team Rocket finally succeeds at capturing Dorothychu.

I don’t know what to say about PriPara this week. There are those episodes where they fill time by randomly bringing back side characters that had horrible episodes in the first place. The problem is, did you really have no better trigger to help finish developing Leona? Leona’s ultimate move to Hibiki’s team was something I was looking forward to, but this is kind of a painful episode for it to occur during. Even in an alternate universe where I laughed at this episode, I don’t think making the entire thing a gag was the way to go. And throwing in serious flashbacks during a gag episode doesn’t really balance things out either. It just makes thing more awkward.

Today on sock puppet theater.

Fairilu uses this week to help introduce more characters, but the entirety of it ended up dragging pretty horribly. The mini-stories they were trying to sell just didn’t cover the time very well, and the really shallow animations happening in the entire first half of the episode didn’t help elevate the mood. The 15/15 break is actually a great strategy for kids shows, but it’s pretty bad if you can’t fill those fifteen minutes without feeling draggy. So I hope they shape up a bit next week (and Deen shapes up period).

At least Rico has perfected the art of falling with style.

Four weeks and Precure is still holding strong. I think it could have been contested a lot more easily this week (and even moreso in the coming weeks), but nobody is really stepping up to take them on just yet. The strength of MahoPri right now is that they’re keeping up a fairly high pace early in the series. So even if the episode’s main plot isn’t incredibly complex, there’s just enough happening to keep you entertained. The natural problem of this is that there’s the high potential that they burn through things to do to fast. But, for the meantime, they seem to have plans for the next coming weeks. And hopefully, by constructing it in this fashion, it gives them enough time to plan out another mini-arc before the current one expires. I don’t think I enjoyed this episode as much as the first three (maybe more than the second), but I’d be lying if I said I still wasn’t having fun watching it. And I think the mini things they’re working in this early into the series already are going to be fun to see unfold over time.

Wrap-Up
We’re finally entering March and that means dueling finales between Aikatsu and PriPara. So as they both start to boil up to that point, it will be interesting to see if one of them manages to topple Precure’s current first place streak. I’d love to see Fairilu come out of nowhere and be the one to do it, but I don’t see that happening.
