Little Girl Anime Power Rankings Season 3 – Week 7

This another one of those weeks where I would have really liked to just switch every image to represent Precure. And, just like last time, everything was so horrible this week that I regret not doing it. But they say third time is the charm, right?

Speaking of Precure, they finally put out a load more goods that used Rico’s official romanization. Now I can no longer pretend that it was just a one time misprint. So I guess I have to use Liko from now on despite my own distaste for it.

Emily just couldn’t resist trying that roll Kay-ke.

Yes, I only chose this image because that joke needed to be made. And I don’t care if you’ve heard it already. You get to hear it again, and I bet you laughed.

Previous Standings

1) Mahou Tsukai Precure! – 36 Points
2) Aikatsu Stars! – 32 Points
3) Rilu Rilu Fairilu – 31 Points
4) PriPara – 25 Points

Usually this is the point in the rankings where one show starts severely pulling away from the others. I don’t know if that is happening this season.

Weekly Point Distribution

1) Mahou Tsukai Precure! – +9 Points
2) PriPara – +6 Points
3) Rilu Rilu Fairilu – +3 Points
4) Aikatsu Stars! – +1 Point

A Word From the Big Man
So this was one of those weeks where I stick one show at the top and then decide what I hated the least of everything else to determine the rest of the ranks.

It’s almost like they’re related or something.

So Precure cheated in two ways this week. For one, it’s doing two Halloween episodes. I guess it’s kind of fitting though because Kotoha has parents who grew up in different cultures. So it’s only fair that she gets to celebrate both forms of Halloween because of it. It’s like getting to celebrate two December holidays, except in Kotoha’s case it just leaves her really prone to getting cavities.

The other thing is this episode was also a celebrity guest episode. What that means is that Toei actually has to put forth a little extra effort in the episode lest they give a bad impression to all the additional audience tuning in. And since this year’s celebrity happened to be Mayuyu, that’s probably not the viewer base you want to give off a bad impression to.

Overall, this first half of Precure’s Halloween bonanza was all you could ask for from a gag episode alongside some incredibly detailed animation. Even when the episode tried to make you take it seriously, it would do a 180 turn just to remind you that you weren’t watching for a serious lesson. Except the brushing your teeth part. Always make sure to brush up those pearly whites, kids.

Ako mourns being the only character acting normally.

So Stars has already done a full gag episode before with their weird take on Shrek. I didn’t particularly like that episode, but it was overall just a problem of all the jokes falling relatively flat. Nonetheless, it was a fitting situation for the characters to act a little bit silly in an otherwise serious plot.

But let’s pretend we live in a world where the jokes in this week’s Stars were funny and not terribly awkward. The reality is, it wouldn’t have changed how awkward this episode really was. It’s a little fair to have characters be a little silly in some situations, but Stars kind of shattered a lot of it’s characters into really tiny pieces. So many were so far out of character in the episode that you probably could have mistaken yourself for tuning into the wrong show. I think there’s a limit to how far you can have characters break character in a gag episode, and Stars went leaps and bounds over that line. So far Stars has done a horrible job with it’s gag episodes, and that really doesn’t bode well for when Christmas rolls around.

Heavily recycled gags.

Speaking of bad gags, the first half of Fairilu was all about them this week. Actually, Fairilu only escaped last place because Stars was just that bad. Otherwise, the second half of Fairilu was decent. It did a good job of drawing from ideas in previous episodes, but I almost feel like it would have been better with a more central character experiencing it. But, if nothing else, there there was some merit to Fairilu this week. And that’s already a lot more than Stars did.

A shame that brains will never defeat plot armor.

So as it turns out, Non couldn’t just be wrong by herself. No, they need a higher authority partner she could be wrong with. And that’s how Janis’s character was born. I mean, I wouldn’t really mind this plot development in PriPara if it wasn’t obvious what was going to happen. I know. There’s no guarantee that some disastrous event will happen when Juri decides to become an idol, Janis will act high and mighty about being right, and eventually everything will be resolved by some magic live that Lala and the gang will put on. But, it’s PriPara. Isn’t that exactly what everyone expects at this point?

Lala has to be right, and Lala will always be right until she stops being the main character. So I guess, at this point, I’m just going to look forward to everything else except that final episode where we’ll most likely be in store for another twelve minute live scene. But PriPara still sucked less than the other two shows below it this week; so let’s not forget that.

Wrap-Up
Next week we’re in store for a Halloween post and we’ll see who did the holiday real justice. I can give you an early hint and say that Stars is probably out of the running already.
