A Word From the Big Man
Fairilu does another Christmas episode before most shows even air one.

I smell a spin off.

This week’s episode of Precure is a great example of good idea, bad execution. I don’t really have an issue with them establishing that Kushe was sucked into a trap and was inherently a bad guy. And I think the expansion of the relationship he and the Headmaster had was something I had asked for way back when Dokurokushe was initially defeated. But they really put off talking about it until now, and it ended up coming up and ending all in one episode.

The real problem that plagued the episode was the necessity to bring the original villain trio back. Among everything that’s happened, it didn’t really do much of anything. They were revived, they defied Olva, Olva was defeated, and then they happily leave because they have nothing better to do. End of story. Had they actually contributed something or helped attest to there being a portion of Kushe’s soul still being present when they were serving under him, maybe it would have made sense. But if they wanted to do something like that, it would have really taken a lot more time than two episodes to do it.

Like I said, this episode had some ideas in it that could have been great. But it came down to the writers not giving those ideas enough time to develop when they really did have a good amount of throwaway episodes and extra time during episodes to allow the necessary development. But hindsight is always 20/20.

We had a florist go idol; so why not swap it around?

Even if I have a few greater scheme quarrels with it, I really did enjoy Stars this week. It kinds of goes back to that two episode arc that Stars did to patch up the relationship between Yozora and Mahiru. Overall, it paired two fitting episodes together and properly developed a character. The problem is, does Stars resolve character struggles too fast sometimes?

I had really thought they would take Yume’s struggle with her powers to the end of the series. I don’t really know what lies in the future for Stars, but the strength of the original franchise was the amount of foresight it had. It always created situations and developed characters, but it left a lot of things untouched so that there would be something to address if the series decided to go on longer. But with every episode of Stars I feel like they give themselves less and less breathing room. And when you do that, you tend to corner writers into making really extreme movements just to generate plot. I’m not saying it will happen, but I just feel like it generates the constant ups and downs the Stars writing suffers from.

Fairilu always has to complicate holidays.

Fairilu is that token Christmas episode that’s good for the kids. It makes up some bullshit that makes Santa seem more plausible, and it’s generally just cute and makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. However, Fairilu just has to complicate every holiday beyond belief. You know, the fact that Santa is a highly attractive young male Fairilu that commands an army of flying angler fish…things. I don’t think they even mentioned reindeer once in the episode, but I might have gotten distracted at some point and missed it.

Either way, Fairilu packed about everything you could ever want into it’s Christmas episode. Snow, presents, children’s dreams coming true, Santa, Christmas miracles, Christmas romance, you name it.

A very PriPara Christmas episode.

This week PriPara did a Christmas episode. At least that’s what I’d like to say, but PriPara staff doesn’t believe in Christmas. Instead, they give another onslaught of performances as the other two Non Sugar members spend the entire episode talking Chiri into defying Janis.

I realize that PriPara has never really done a true Christmas episode because it never falls quite right timing wise. But I really can’t take that excuse because Precure manages to do it every year and, most of the time, stays completely plot relevant. So, as usual, PriPara staff is just lazy.

Now all of you go to sleep or Santa won’t stop by your house.
