Little Girl Anime Power Rankings Season 4 – Week 19

I’ve always been of the school that it’s best to get sickness out of the way at the beginning of the year. That being said, I didn’t expect it to weigh me down for an entire week.

Kind of had it coming with all those shady business practices.

We never will know where all the bakery profit is going to.

Previous Standings

1) Idol Time PriPara – 194 Points
2) Kirakira Precure A La Mode – 145 Points
3) Aikatsu Stars! – 122 Points
4) Rilu Rilu Fairilu – 109 Points

It’s a long trek back to the top for the bottom two.

Weekly Point Distribution

1) Idol Time PriPara – +9 Points
2) Rilu Rilu Fairilu – +6 Points
3) Aikatsu Stars! – +3 Points
4) Kirakira Precure A La Mode – +1 Point

A Word From the Big Man
It’s the first week in the year where everyone reported in, and PriPara didn’t shy away from further asserting dominance.

At least Non properly trains her psychopath partner.

PriPara generally opened it’s year the same as Stars did the previous week. It was overall a light hearted gag episode that allowed them to integrate a handful of characters from the previous season. There was nothing that the episode did wrong, but there was also no part of it that I would write home about. And them setting the time aside for gags doesn’t hurt them in the long run because, of all the shows on the rankings, PriPara has been pacing itself the best.

The episode did remind me just how much I miss Non’s sass. But there is still a small shot that her (as well as a lot of old cast members) will come back into the picture in the coming season.

Balding Precure avoided.

Precure has really hit that point where every decision it has made along the way ultimately comes back to hurt it. I shared a lot of my thoughts on Pekorin as a character previously when she had her previous solo episode. And if you don’t remember, I specifically mentioned how it was probably just better to allow her to retain her human form so they could actually do something with her character outside of being a cute mascot.

But instead they really pushed her out of relevance again only to try and make her into the hero for this one episode. And that just honestly rubbed me the wrong way. They had the chance and perfect turning point to do something with her character previously to make an episode like this work. What we got instead was an even worse iteration of what was done with Yui’s character in Princess Precure. I really don’t mind the idea, but if you’re given the entire series to develop a character on the side but choose not to, then why are you trying to make them a huge deal only during the finale? I’m not going to just roll over and accept it.

I originally thought to put Precure before Stars this week simply because it didn’t have recap. But the thing is, Stars flaunting recap was still more fun to watch than Precure attempting to pull the wool over my eyes.

Kirara eats delicious food.

Stars this week was a weird mix of recap and trying to set up the next big developments in the larger plot. And I don’t really think any of it was really that necessary given where Stars is sitting right now. The only real fascinating part of it was that it was done almost entirely from the point of view of the Venus Ark members. But it does make sense because no huge developments have really happened within the core cast as much as those present on the Venus Ark.

But, when it comes down to it, this episode was really just a mix of watching Kirara eat food and recapping what major events have transpired over the past forty episodes. I give credit that the episode was structured so it delivered the recap in an actual scenario, but it is what it is.

While PriPara did put up a strong episode this week, I do think Stars managed to beat it out with it’s first episode of the year from the previous week. So I have to hand over the 2018 Starter Award and the +10 bonus points over to Stars.

Lip receives lessons from a true rock star.

Fairilu did Fairilu things this week, but that didn’t hurt it when two other shows were on the weak side. The second half was forgettable, and the first half felt like the dragon episode from however many weeks back. The content only holds value if you ever see it surface again in the future, and it’s hard to tell if and when that time will ever come. But this week does hold a lot of relevance to Lip’s character, so I doubt this is the last we’ll be hearing of Gardenia.

A bit of a rough look for 2018, and I hope to see someone really step up to PriPara next week.
